STATE.011.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1790-1800. This 3-story single house was owned in the late 18th century by the South Carolina Society. In the 19th century, it, like an adjoining house, was owned by slave trader Ziba B. Oakes, who possessed a nearby slave mart at 6 Chalmers Street. Slave traders also used the Greek Revival style 3-story masonry building at 15-17 State Street, constructed by William Caldwell or his predecessor before 1848.
HCF has a exterior, open space easement on 11½ State Street (building behind 11 State Street).
Three files contain documentation of the easement on the property including related correspondence and Confirmation of Understanding; Part I certification (National Register); annual inspection reports and correspondence related to the management of the property; structural engineer's report on the dependency (4SE, Inc., 2009).
Files will/may eventually contain additional documentation such as annual inspection reports; requests for alterations; correspondence related to the management of the property; correspondence and other documentation related to the sale of the property; historical research; etc.
See Easement Documentation Photo Files for easement donation photographs (Exh. B to Deed of Conservation Easement) and Covenant/Easement Inspection Photo Files for inspection photography.
