18 State Street (Nathan Hart House)Entry/Object ID
STATE.018.1Scope and Content
Constructed before 1815; altered ca. 1905. Owned for investment purposes by the same family from 1815 to 1905, this 2-story masonry building reflects the changing uses and status of the neighborhood. It was used at various times as a bake house, a junk shop, and the home of a river pilot. A subsequent owner probably altered the front window fenestration and added the turned columned side piazza. The house received a major renovation in the 1980s, as did the unassuming dwelling to the north, 20 State Street, which has a ground-story brick section dating from circa 1870 and a second-story frame portion built circa 1901. Between these two dwellings Unity Alley stretches toward East Bay Street.
File contains FOHG house history (1995); historical/deed research notes including photocopies of 1815, 1905, 1908, 1922 deeds; undergraduate student research report on the history of the house (Caroline Agid, 2014).Collection
