19 State Street (Frederick Wolfe House)Entry/Object ID
STATE.019.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1796; restored ca. 1968. Frederick Wolfe built this simple 2½ story, weatherboarded house after the fire of 1796. After Wolfe's death his widow and her second husband conveyed the building to Thomas N. Gadsden, the wealthy investor who lived at 116 Broad Street. Gadsden held it as one of his many investment properties. In 1968, instead of a threatened demolition, First Federal Savings and Loan gave the house to the Preservation Society of Charleston on the condition that it be moved a few feet to the south (at 21 State Street) to provide access for a parking lot. Generally, most details of the house remained intact in the subsequent restoration, although the Victorian piazza columns were replaced with the current square stock. Most of the simple interior woodwork has survived as well.
File contains historical research report (L. Louis Green, 1970); house history from City of Charleston Tour Guide Training Manual (2011); newspaper and Preservation Progress articles; Preservation Society illustrated house history (brochure); correspondence and notes related to the repairs and renovations (DeCosta) and sale of the house; two parking plan maps; photocopy of 1838 plat; Sanborn Maps (1884, 1888, 1901, 1944, 1951).Collection
