22-24 State Street (Johnson-Poinsett Tenements)Entry/Object ID
STATE.022-24.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1841. Some controversy remains over the date and builder of these double tenements. A leading Charleston statesman and importer of the plant that bears his name, Joel Poinsett amalgamated several lots formerly belonging to Dr. Joseph Johnson in order to construct a double tenement on the property. This building has a central archway surmounted by curious stucco scoring and 3-story facade with gable roof and dormers. (Buildings of Charleston.)
File contains historical research report (L. Louis Green, 1971); FOHG house histories (undatd, 1976); house history from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston (1984); newspaper article (DYKYC, 1982?); photocopy of photograph ca. 1940s? (unattributed, undated).Collection
