Constructed 1849; rehabilitated 1959. Built by order of the City Council for one of the leading fire companies operating in antebellum Charleston, this 2-story stucco building with gabled parapet evolved through a series of uses until the 1950s, when it served as a maritime union hall and a grocery store. The second floor was adapted from a single room with fourteen-foot ceilings to an apartment before its initial restoration as a residence in 1959. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
