Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1821; rehabilitated 1974. The widow of the colonial portraitist Jeremiah Theus owned a house on this site that may have been rebuilt after the fire of 1796. The present house dates to 1821, when it was acquired by the wealthy Christ Church Parish planter and factor Arnoldus Venning. The ground floor formerly housing a shop received the most alteration in its rehabilitation. The parapet with inset panels and dogtoothed cornicing continues to the dwelling next door at 37 State Street, an exposed brick house with similar fenestration. The latter building appears to be of identical construction to its southern neighbor except for the larger size of its windows and its central door architrave with Greek Revival style fluted columns, central swag motif, and a four-paneled Italianate style door. This property was listed in the 1850s as being "new brick -- 3 stories" and passed to Michael McGorty, a "lamplighter" by trade who lit the new gas streetlights each evening. McGorty lived next door at 39 State Street. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.) File contains historical research contained in letter from S. Henry Edmunds (1957); FOHG house history (1997); newspaper article (1977).
