39 State Street (John George Mayer House)Entry/Object ID
STATE.039.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1795; renovated 1983. Built by the grocer John George Mayer around 1795, this dwelling may be the only building on the street to have escaped the fire of 1796. Mayer married the daughter of Jeremiah Theus and his wife Roseannah, who lived next door at 37 State Street. After Mayer's death, his widow married the Reverend Israel Munds, minister of Trinity Methodist Church. The Mundses opened an academy in their dwelling and operated it for several years. By the late-19th century the building became a rental property. This three-story stuccoed building with a hipped roof sits back from the street and faces a garden extensively improved in a 1983 renovation. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
File contains FOHG house histories (1980s, 1992, 1995); FOHG garden history (1995); portion of narrative history (SC Historical Society); historical deed research report (presumably by Harlan Greene, SCHS, undated); article about renovation (by D.R. Mowbray, Preservation Progress, May 1965); house history from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston (1984); scant chain-of-title research notes (1774, 1789); letter from HCF to BAR regarding proposed addition (1983).Collection
