Fifteen B&W photographs of the exterior and interior of Central Baptist Church (26 Radcliffe Street), including the interior murals.
Constructed 1891; restored 1990. John P. Hutchinson, architect. Central Baptist Church was designed by African American architect, John P. Hutchinson. It was the first church in the city to be designed, constructed and financed solely by African Americans. The interior contains murals depicting the life and death of Jesus were painted in 1912-15 by artist Amohamed Milai of Calcutta, India. The church tower, painted with “Jesus Saves” on its east and west sides, was severely damaged by Hurricane Hugo and replaced with a replica.
