Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1880; alterations 1974, 2000, 2004. 5 Franklin Street is a 2½ story frame residence on a stuccoed masonry foundation, with a pedimented front-gable roof and a two-tier piazza along the south elevation. A very good example of Charleston vernacular architecture. Three files contain documentation of the easement on the property including related correspondence; Part I certification (National Register); easement appraisal report and IRS form 8283; narrative history (David A. Farrow, Herbert G. McGuire, 2001); historical research and supporting documentation prepared by Sarah Fick in preparation for Part I certification application including summary history and source notes, photocopies of maps and plats (1845 McCrady, 1850 survey plat, 1852 Bridgens & Allen, 1853 survey plat, 1872 Birds-Eye View, 1888-1955 Sanborn maps, 1891 plat), and miscellaneous information about Lewis Trapman regarding 5 Franklin and 160 Broad. Files may eventually contain additional documentation such as annual inspection reports; requests for alterations; correspondence related to the management of the property; correspondence and other documentation related to the sale of the property; etc. See Easement Documentation Photo Files for easement donation photographs (Exh.
