Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1800; restored 1927. This simple single house built of brick and covered with stucco represents the typical dual residential and commercial occupation of this area in post-Revolutionary Charleston. The building was restored in 1927 with the addition of an iron balcony to its second-floor front facade. Reflecting the reclamation of this street at the beginning of Charleston's preservation fervor, the structure was restored by Mrs. T.W. Punnett, a cousin of Franklin D. Roosevelt. (Buildings of Charleston.) Three files contain documentation of the easement on the property including related correspondence and Confirmation of Understanding; letter regarding appraisal value; Part I certification (National Register); annual inspection reports, requests for alterations, and correspondence related to the management of the property; history of house in newspaper article (1932); Preservation Progress article (March 1963); house history from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston (1984); house history from City of Charleston Tour Guide Training Manual (2011). See Easement Documentation Photo Files for easement donation photographs (Exh. B to Deed of Conservation Easement) and Covenant/Easement Inspection Photo Files for inspection photography. Sometimes referred to as 77 East Bay Street.
