6 Tradd Street (John Fabre Jr. House)Entry/Object ID
TRADD.006.1Scope and Content
Constructed c. 1788; restored before 1920. The merchant John Fabre Jr., son of Charleston's Lutheran minister, bought this house in 1789, shortly after its construction by mercantile partners Josiah Smith, Daniel deSaussure, and Edward Darrell. It was subsequently the property of various prominent Charlestonians including Alexander Jones, owner of 102 Tradd Street, and Philip Messervey. At the time of the Civil War it served as the store of merchant William Gatewood, builder of 21 Legare Street. During Reconstruction, the edifice became a school and church for African-American children and served a variety of uses before its rescue by Susan Pringle Frost.
