Scope and Content

Constructed by 1726; rehabilitation mid-1980s. With its unusual surviving gambrel roofline, double tenement form, chimneys, and other features, the building at 8-10 Tradd Street has generally been ascribed to construction in 1726 due to surviving grants of common-use alleys on the eastern and western edges of the building. Thomas Lamboll, a merchant and horticulturist, constructed the brick structure, and, surviving the fire of 1778 more or less intact, it remained in the hands of his descendants until 1846. The gambrel or "dutch" roof form, common in mid-18th century Charleston, largely disappeared, particularly through early-20th century demolitions. Its presence on this building may point to circa 1750 replacement of an earlier roof form; the surviving roofline has been somewhat altered with 20th century tin covering and later shed dormers. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.) File contains FOHG house history (1999); narrative history (L. Louis Green,1968); "Historical and Architectural Notes" (Robert Stockton, 1998); newspaper article; house history from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston (1984); Rosen and Associates (engineers) pre-purchase inspection report (1998); architectural drawing of proposed window addition (1998) (no indication as to whether or not it was installed).
