27 Tradd Street (Joseph Johnson House)Entry/Object ID
TRADD.027.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1779-82; renovated early 20th century. Although fieldwork on this building has never been completed, research indicates that a shopkeeper, Joseph Johnson, built this 2½ story wood house after his purchase of the lot in 1779. Although it retains its original beaded weatherboarding and gable roof with two pedimented dormers on the east, the Venetian (Palladian) window in the gable end and the first-floor window heads probably reflect a later renovation. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
File contains brief chain-of-title research notes (L. Louis Green); brief architectural description from walled city guide book (manuscript, 1995); Rosen and Associates (engineers) inspection report (2001); 1886 earthquake damage assessment; Hurricane Hugo damage assessment; historical research report (Lavelle, ca. 2016).Collection
