TRADD.035.1Scope and Content
Constructed by 1747; restored 1920s. 35 Tradd Street is often used to illustrate early-18th century construction in the densely populated walled city. Most of the structures built in this area during this time contained passages to the rear work yards; most were only two stories with one or two rooms per story. During this time porches were restricted to outside rear stairs or small balconies on the exteriors of grander buildings. Street frontage in the walled city was at such a premium that most construction spanned from property line to property line, unlike later Charleston landscapes, which provide for a side yard. 35 Tradd Street was originally two buildings built by Col. Miles Brewton as part of Brewton's Corner (now 77 Church Street); these have been combined into a single family residence. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
File contains FOHG house history (2008); FOHG garden history 2008); narrative history (unattributed, undated), with 1941 DYKYC); building history from Vernacular Architecture of Charleston (Louis P. Nelson); correspondence from HCF regarding replacement of the clay tile roof (2 letters, 1985); Rosen and Associates (engineers) inspection report (2004); 1886 Earthquake damage assessment; Hurricane Hugo damage assessment survey (PDF).Collection
