Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1770 or ca. 1736. Construction of this three-and-a-half story brick single house has been attributed to Jacob Motte, Treasurer of the Province. However, William Harvey advertised this property for sale in 1770, describing the house as "new-built,” at which time George Abbott Hall lived there. William Harvey (1717-1784), a merchant, built 63 Tradd Street and 58 Meeting Street at about the same time as well. (City of Charleston Tour Guide Training Manual.) File contains FOHG house histories (1994, 1995, 2004, 2011); SC Historical Society house tour history (1971); narrative history (Susan C. Rosen, 1998); newspaper articles; house history from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston (1984); house history from Architectural Guide to Charleston (by Simons & Thomas); report "Assessment of Surviving Historic Fabric" (Louis P. Nelson, 2004); research on the kitchen building (Preservation Consultants/John Laurens, 1991); correspondence related to the architectural materials from the house at the Saint Louis Art Museum (1929, 1984-85).
