TRADD.070.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1774. 70 Tradd Street is an excellent example in the arrangement of an 18th century single house site. This building was constructed for Judge Robert Pringle in 1774 (as denoted by an old plaque on the exterior wall). The existing piazza dates to the late 18th century. A plat of 1787 portrays a "dwelling house three stories of brick with seller [sic] covered with shingles and a rod or conductor with a piazza"; "kitchen and wash room two stories of wood"; "carriage house and stables one story with lofts of wood"; and "garden." A significant change is the addition of a Victorian bay window on the first floor of the street facade. Unlike the brick single houses on Church Street, which mixed commercial and residential functions, this property's only street access was by steps leading to the piazza. Most single houses do, however, allow for carriage access through the side yard. The 1787 plat shows a building on the second half of this double lot abutting the double tenement at 72-74 Tradd Street. 70 Tradd has occupied the second half of the double lot since 1839. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
