TRADD.075.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1815; renovated early 20th century. Dr. Aaron Leland, a native of Massachusetts who served as minister of the nearby First Scots Presbyterian Church, constructed this 3-story weatherboarded house around 1815. Its engaged Ionic-columned entry leads directly into a stair which rises from the raised masonry basement to the first floor. A New England visitor, Ebenezer Kellog, recorded his 1817 impressions in a diary: "Dr. Leland's yard is accessible but small. He has one of the most comfortable though not one of the most elegant houses in the city. It is of his own building and accommodated to the climate, having a very large piazza on the south which looks into his garden." Leland sold the house in 1821 to Joel Stevens. Beginning in 1869 the house was owned by the Charleston physician and philanthropist John L. Dawson. Dawson's will specified that the building be sold to provide an infirmary at the William Enston Home complex, 900 King Street. During the course of the 20th century much of the rear piazzas have been enclosed to create additional living spaces. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
