TRADD.103.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1797; restored ca. 1960. A German organist, often called the "Father of Music in Charleston," constructed this 2½ story Charleston single house of stuccoed brick. The structure formerly had three bays on the Tradd Street elevation on the first and second floors, but the central street door was later closed in. Piazzas added in the 19th century were removed by 1960. The dwelling retains an old clay tile roof and some of its interior woodwork. Eckhard, born at Eschwege in Hesse, began his career as a church organist at the age of twelve. Traveling to America as a Hessian soldier in 1776, he settled after the Revolution, in Richmond, Virginia. Eckhard came to Charleston in 1786 as organist at St. John's Lutheran Church, and in 1809 became organist and choir master at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, where he began the first boys' choir in America and published a collection of tunes, chants, and anthems. Eckhard taught music to private pupils throughout his career and used a portion of the ground floor of the house for their instruction.
