TRADD.143.1Scope and Content
Constructed 1797-1801; altered circa 1855. The merchant Tobias Bowles constructed this house in suburban fashion with an extensive setback from Tradd Street and a prospect over the Ashley River. Though several periods of subsequent filling interrupted the river prospect, the front garden remains, despite the density of later construction in the immediate neighborhood. The wrought- and cast-iron entry gates, with crossed arrow pickets and surmounting scrollwork, sit atop a molded stucco coping and create a striking entry to the property. Although the front fenestration hints at the dwelling's early-19th century origin, piazza details, second and third story doorways, and interior trim indicate the structure's substantial remodeling by Solomon Legare Jr. in the mid-19th century.
File contains FOHG house histories (undated-1980s?, 2000); newspaper articles (including 1930, 1976 DYKYC); narrative history (Robert Stockton); Rosen and Associates (engineers) structural inspection report (2000), with related letter (1991).Collection
