Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1880; renovated 1997. The Duncan house is a typical example of a working-class single house of the post Civil War period. The structure has a unique gable roof and a simple side piazza. The building originally included a separate one-story kitchen ell to the rear. Only a few alterations have been made to the dwelling in the 20th century. This simple 1880s frame single house was built by a freedman as his residence fifteen years after the end of the Civil War. African Americans lived throughout the "South of Broad" neighborhood in the late-19th and early-20th centuries, often on alleys and smaller streets. The elder Daniel Duncan acquired a substantial lot on Greenhill Street in 1872, probably a site burned over in the fire of 1861. Within a few years, the property was subdivided, and Daniel Z. Duncan, apparently the elder Daniel's son, built a small house facing Tradd Street. The senior Duncan was a laborer, and his son followed the limited opportunities for blacks in the navy positions and became, consecutively, a buoy tender, a fireman for the steamer "Wisteria," and eventually assistant inspection officer at the Navy Yard. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.) File contains narrative history and historical research (Poston) including photocopy of 1872 deed to Daniel Z. Duncan; FOHG house history (2001); correspondence and drawings related to alterations (1995, 1997); Rosen and Associates (engineers) inspection reports (1993, 1997).
