131 Tradd Street (Ruth Lowndes Simmons House)Entry/Object ID
TRADD.131.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1804. This substantial brick house is best known for the well-documented "celibate bridegroom" story. Following the wedding of Francis Simmons, the builder of 14 Legare Street, to Ruth Lowndes, Simmons delivered his bride to this house and returned to Legare Street alone. For reasons that have been often speculated on, but never documented, Simmons called on his wife regularly, presided at her dinner parties and hosted her receptions, but the couple never spent the night in the same house. File contains FOHG house history (1970).
