Notes: John Bivins : The tea table in Maryland is entirely mahogany, and I would say dates 1760-1770. The Pedestal turning is one of about two dozen that I consider to be by the same Charleston turner. The rest of the table was made in one of the shops of which we have at least five complete tables, based upon the leg patterns; a virtually identical one is illustrated in fig. 130 of Milby. Typical of most Charleston tables, this one does not have a "birdcage," that is, a turning top. It is good to excellent condition, and really needs nothing except rubbing up and the removal of some old plastic wood under the pedestal.. The two replaced legs scarcely can be differentiated from the original, which is why I studied them very closely and discovered from their surfaces that they were early replacements. Elfe, as mentioned, recorded numerous tea table repairs, the most monumental of which was " to a new Pillar for a Tea Table" at L 2:1 in 1772. It was probably broken at the bottom where the legs dovetail in place. I think an untouched one would bring $20,000.
