Chinese Export Porcelain. Pistol-Handled Urn with Cover. Cobalt and gilt decoration, circa 1810. Base is glazed to look like a wooden pedestal base.
" A Massive Chinese Export Pisto-Handled Urn and Cover, C. 1810 the shield shaped body molded on either side with a gilt-edged oval cartouche containing a sepia landscape within a blue enamel and gilt grapevine border above a blue and gilt husk garland pendant hung between the handles, all raised on a waisted circular foot decorated with leaves above a brown faux bois square base, (some restoration).
This shape, taken possibly from a Wedgwood example after a Marieberg faience urn inspired originally by a Scandinavian silver model, was translated into Chinese Export porcelain for the Portugese from 1775, and subsequently for the American market."
This urn is similar to a pair of urns that belonged to Governor and Mrs. Allston, documented in "Tales from Chicora Wood" and whose archaeological remains were found on the grounds of the Nathaniel Russell House.Collection
