Scope and Content

12 Vanderhorst Street (Irish Volunteers Armory): Constructed 1888; rehabilitated mid 1980s; rebuilt behind façade 1989-90. The Irish Volunteers, a militia company founded in Charleston in 1798, erected this Gothic style armory six years after buying the property from the city in 1882. The Irish volunteers were one of a number of elite companies who served with distinction in the War of 1812, the Seminole War of 1836, and the Civil War. Bay windows sheathed with diagonally set tongue and groove siding ornament the irregularly shaped front façade. Plaques with the date of construction, "1888," the obscure date "1784," and harps along with shamrocks decorate the face of the building and the crenellated parapet. Although the structure was splendidly rehabilitated as offices by its owners, an architectural firm and an engineering firm, some years before Hurricane Hugo, the 1989 storm's winds or a spawned tornado destroyed all but the front portion of the old armory. The owners again restored the front portion and rebuilt a new wing behind. File contains FOHG building history from Tour Guide Training Manual (2011); newspaper article (ca. 1970s? DYKYC); photocopy of measured drawing of the front elevation.
