Scope and Content

Developed after 1790. Vendue Range takes its name from the vendue masters or auctioneers who had their establishments here. The street is on "made land" that accrued during the 18th century. A brick market was built in the middle of what is now Vendue Range after the Revolution. It was superseded by the City Market at Meeting and Market streets. Vendue Range has notable rows of 18th and 19th century commercial buildings. (City of Charleston Tour Guide Training Manual) File contains street history from Buildings of Charleston; street history from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston (1984); historical research notes (scant, unattributed); photocopy of captioned photo of Vendue Range looking west in 1865 (source not indicated); information about Clyde Steamship Lines (Charleston Illustrated, 1875, and Resources and Attractions of Charleston, 1898); historical research memorandum about 1-11 Vendue Range (Ernest Shealy to Jon Poston, 1986).
