Description

B&W photograph of the John Lege House (9 Logan Street) and the Maria Wilson House (11 Logan Street), east (front) elevation (L to R). View is partially obstructed by trees. (Two copies of photo in sleeve.) 9 Logan Street was constructed 1874; renovated late-1950s. John Lege, a cotton broker and partner in the firm of Mottet, Huchet and Company, built this plain, late-Greek Revival style house after the Civil War in an area of Logan Street burned out in the fire of 1861. After using a fire loan from the city for the "rebuilding of the burnt district" Lege sold the building to William Leidler. The current door architrave with fluted Doric columns and semicircular transom was added by Mr. and Mrs. S. Henry Edmunds, the owners of the house in the 1950s and 1960s. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.) 11 Logan Street was constructed 1882. Mrs. Wilson conservatively chose the Charleston single house style for her new residence in 1882. Distinguishable from antebellum examples by its one-over-one sashes, Italianate style piazza door architrave, and flat hooded window heads, the Wilson House, like its other postbellum neighbors, employs a setback to create a front yard. A Victorian cast-iron fence separates this space from the sidewalk. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
