KING.440-442.1Scope and Content
Constructed before 1840. James Fergerson, a planter in St. John's Parish, Berkeley, bought this parcel from Ann Wragg Fergerson, the widow of a Revolutionary War hero, and built a two-story brick dwelling in the 1830s. The gabled-roof house retains the remnants of its double-tiered Greek Revival style piazzas on the south and the shell of extensive outbuildings to the rear. This later structure became a bakery with the sale of the site to the Amme family in 1856. They owned the property until 1931. A late Italianate style facade with pressed-metal ornament was added in the late 19th century, but most of this has been removed. In the 1980s the Board of Architectural Review repeatedly denied petitions for its demolition. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
