Scope and Content

Illustrated page (engraving) showing Fort Sumter before the first bombardment and Fort Sumter in ruins after the surrender of Charleston. From Harper's Weekly (Supplement, April 22, 1876, page 338). Both illustrations appeared in earlier issues of Harper's Weekly. The top illustration appeared in HW on January 26, 1861, entitled "Fort Sumter, Seen from the Rear, at Low Water, from a Sketch by an Officer of Major Anderson's Command." The bottom illustration was originally entitled "Fort sumter, in Charleston Harbor, from a Recent Sketch by William Waud. (HW issue not indicated.)
