Description

Chest-on-chest 1750/60 Mahogany with original brasses and brass side handles; secondary woods of cypress and heart pine A chest-on chest is a two-part case piece, containing drawers for the storage of clothing. The top consists of a graduated three-over-two-over three drawer configuration. The top case sits on a larger bottom case, transitioned by a cove and torus medial molding. It displays chamfered corners, embellished with stop-fluting, ending in lamb's tongue molding , and a flat cornice on the top consiisting of dental molding above a flattened cove molding. The lower case consists of three full width drawers. Chest lifts are found on either side. However, they may not be original. The case rests on a cove and torus bed molding, supported by ogee bracket feet at both front and rear. The drawers are framed with cockbeading to protect the veneer. They are supported by 3/4 depth dustboards. The hardware appears to be original.

Notes

Overall good to fair condition. The left front foot is missing the lower carved blocks, the side block is stored inside one of the drawers. The side block on the front right foot is loose. On the upper left side of the lower chest, the thin piece of veneer alongside the drawer fronts is loose and has popped away from the surface - it is not broken. One of the drawer slides was loose and was dislocated during the move to 40. It is stored inside one of the upper drawers. The veneer on the drawers shows cracking. Parts Missing: front left foot block

General Notes

Note

Notes: old #99.8.2 Chamfered upper cases and straight cornices typify Charleston double chests in the 1750s and early 1760s. Five-drawer configurations were preferred in urban centers of colonial America over the four-tier arrangement in England. (Bivens and Rauschenberg, Charleston Furniture , p. 107-108) Status: Loan
