Scope and Content

Legare Street was called Johnson's Street for Sir Nathaniel Johnson, Governor of the Province from 1703-09. From Tradd to Broad, it originally was named Friend Street in recognition of the Society of Friends, or Quakers. From Broad to Queen, the street was named Allen for the man who allowed it to be cut through his property. Allen Street later became part of Friend Street, and after 1900, the entire length came to be called Legare Street, after Solomon Legaré, a prosperous Huguenot silversmith who owned considerable real estate at Legare and Tradd Streets. (Tour Guide Training Manual) File contains photocopy of 1919 "Plat of Lots on Tradd and Legare Streets" encompassing the northeast corner of Legare and Tradd (36 Legare, 38 Legare, 40 Legare, 42 Legare, 112 Tradd, and 114 Tradd); photocopy of 1775? plat of 41 Legare (northwest corner of Legare and Tradd); 36 Legare FOHG tour script (1997); Philip Simmons ironwork survey sheet for 36 Legare Street. File also contains article "Historic Schools of Legare Street" by Sarah Fick (Preservation Progress, 2010) that includes information about Friend Street School (forerunner of Crafts School), Madame Talvande's Select School for Young Ladies [32 Legare Street], Miss Julia Datty's School [31 Legare Street], Madam Petit's School for Young Ladies [17 Legare Street], Miss Murden's School for Children (later Misses Sass School) [23 Legare Street], and Gaud School [29 Legare Street].
