By the 1820s, “top and drop” style earrings, such as those seen here, were extremely popular. These earrings, in their original red leather case, belonged to Alicia Russell Middleton, daughter of Bristol, Rhode Island, native and wealthy merchant Nathaniel Russell.Item Type

Pair of earrings belonging to Alicia Hopton Russell Middleton. Earrings in original red leather case with metal catch, lined in white silk. Earrings are gold and onyx with snow-flake like designs of small diamonds. Top section is round with seven diamonds. Detachable teardrop shaped pendant has nineteen diamonds. Earrings have French backs. No discernable markings. Earrings are in excellent condition.
