Gift of Mr. John M. Rivers, Jr. Original map (admiralty chart) entitled: "America, East Coast: Charleston Harbour from the United States Coast Survey, 1858" Annotations entitled: "Shewing [sic] the positions of forts and batteries defending Charleston Harbor alluded to in Gen. Ripley's official reports of April, July, August, & September, 1863. The approach of the enemy was along Folly Island, his depot was at the mouth of Stono River seven miles S.W. of Lighthouse Inlet with inland navigation by Folly River." Original map dated 1858, published 1861. Annotations are undated. Original map published at Admiralty, London, under the superintendence of Capt. Washington, R.N.:F.R.S., Hydrographer ... Creator of annotations is unattributed. Original map of Charleston, with names of islands and waterways. Title block also includes coordinates of Charleston Lighthouse and description of the location of Castle Pinckney. Uses drawings of the Confederate flag as markers for batteries and other defenses, the annotations indicate the location of forts and positions of batteries, including Fort Ripley, Battery __eam, Battery Ramsey, Battery Glover, Battery Wample, Battery Harleston, Battery Cheves, Battery Simpkins, Battery Bee, Battery Gregg, Battery Wagner, Battery Beauregard, and Battery Marshall. Also shows the location of Black Island, Oyster Point, Folly River, Little Folly [Island?], detached batteries July 10, and the positions of Federal ironclads at "4 h., 5 min., a.m. April 1863." Fold marks in original map obscure some details of scale and publication details.
