Description

Photograph of a woman and four children standing by the capstan from the Battleship Maine that had been located in Hampton Park in the early 20th century.

Context

According to a Hampton Park expert Kevin Eberle, the capstan had been located at the western part of the park, likely the part that later became the Citadel campus. Therefore, its relocation was necessary when the campus took it over.
