WARREN.089.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1823-24; rehabilitated 1985; restored 1990s. Justice Benjamin F. Dunkin, a native of Massachusetts and descendant of the wealthy Faneuil family from Boston, became chancellor of the Court of Equity of South Carolina and acquired substantial town property as well as ownership of a large plantation, Midway, in All Saints Parish near Georgetown. In 1823 Dunkin purchased six lots in Radcliffeborough from Payton Wood, selling three lots after completing his house and gardens on the other three. The four story dwelling at 89 Warren Street has a late-neoclassical style entry with engaged columns on the Warren Street side. Large polygonal bays mark the east and west ends of the dwelling, and two tiers of piazzas on a brick piered foundation face the remnant of the Dunkin House garden. Falling into disrepair after World War II, the building was in a substantial state of deterioration before its initial rehabilitation by an investor in the mid 1980s and ongoing work by a new owner.
