Scope and Content

Constructed before 1818; altered before 1885. Nathaniel Ingraham, a merchant who served on John Paul Jones's Bon Homme Richard, built this 3-story brick and stucco dwelling between 1810 and 1818. Beginning as a hipped roof dwelling, the structure has always oriented to the harbor, even though its entry has continually faced Water Street. In the 1820s William Burgoyne owned the house and purchased the newly built Francis Saltus House next door at 6 Water Street as well. Otis Mills, developer of the Mills House, bought the combined properties in 1832. After it was shell damaged by the bombardment in 1864, its post-war owner, Anna Wells, and her husband, the Confederate hero and writer Dr. Edward Wells, made various changes, including a Second Empire mansard roof and cast-metal cornice and window heads. Wells's daughter Sabina Elliott Wells lived here prior to her career as a Newcomb potter. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.) File contains draft of a Part I certification application; FOHG house histories (1966, 1991, 2005, 2008, 2016); house historical information (SCHS files); newspaper article (Mercury, 2010); house history from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston (1984); house history from City of Charleston Tour Guide Training Manual (2011); chain-of-title research notes (20th century owners); photocopies of Sanborn Maps; photocopy of 1835 plat; Rosen and Associates (engineers) inspection report (2000).
