Scope and Content

Constructed between 1818-1840. The general architectural appearance of this house and the scale of the building suggest an early 19th century date, but the recorded deeds and conveyances place the date anywhere from 1818 to 1840. Circumstantial evidence suggests that the builder was Francis Saltus, who purchased the land from the Rivers family in 1818. The property was sold to Otis Mills in 1832. He likely held this property for investment and rental income. During the later decades of the 19th century, the house was converted to a tenement and by the early part of the 20th century, carved into 10 apartments. Conversion back to a single family residence occurred in the 1960s. Fortunately, the basic single house plan remained intact with enough of the original elements to identify this as a Federal style residence. The delicate door surround at the entrance and the shallow piazza arches with slender columns are characteristic of this style. (Source: FOHG house histories.) File contains FOHG house histories (undated, 1991, 1997, 2000); FOHG garden history (2000); Preservation Society Tour house history (undated); historical research (Harlan Greene?, undated); "measuring report" with floor plans (2008); realtor listing information with exterior and interior photographs (ca. 1988); postcard with illustration of house (1988) (see image in this record); Board of Adjustment-Zoning approval of property line adjustment (1998).
