Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1778-80; altered ca. 1858-1880. In 1778 McCully Righton, a brother of Joseph Righton and a wealthy cooper in his own right, purchased a portion of Grand Modell lot 298 on the south side of the canal that was filled to become Water Street. This traditional Charleston single house consists of a 2½ story main block on a high masonry foundation sheltered on the west by a double-tiered piazza screened by an Italianate style entry door that was probably added before the 1880s. Righton's family kept the property until 1858. David Briggs acquired it before the Civil War, but bankruptcy in 1868 required its forced sale. Henry Siegling of the Charleston family of music sellers purchased the house in 1874. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.) Three files contain documentation of the easement on the property including related correspondence and Confirmation of Understanding; Part I certification (National Register); annual inspection reports, requests for alterations, and correspondence related to the management of the property; architectural drawings reflecting proposed alterations (Preservation Consultants, 2002); FOHG house histories (1997, 2007); historical information including timeline, plats, research notes; Hurricane Hugo Damage Survey (pdf on Media link); historical research report (Alexandra Jones, Houselore, 2018). See Easement Documentation Photo Files for easement donation photographs (Exh. B to Deed of Conservation Easement). No inspection photographs on file (see Easement Manager for digital photos).
