Scope and Content

Brick two-story townhouse constructed ca. 1841. One of the original seven tenements constructed on the south side of Wentworth Street after the 1838 fire. After the fire of 1838 Edward Winslow borrowed $3,120 from the Bank of the State of South Carolina to purchase these lots, a site measuring 156 feet wide and 87 feet in depth and began construction of seven row-house tenements (six survive). Such a row is rare in Charleston, as is the six-foot alley laid out by Winslow at the rear of the site. The easternmost tenements (including 5 Wentworth) have two story, front bay windows, probably added in the late 1800s. On the interior each dwelling has a typical side hall opening onto a parlor and dining room separated from each other by sliding pocket doors. The interior of this building contains many original features. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.) Three files contain documentation of the easement on the property including related correspondence, including Confirmation of Understanding and "conceptual approval" letter; Part I certification (National Register); easement appraisal letter and IRS form 8283; annual inspection reports, requests for alterations, and correspondence related to the management of the property; historical/chain-of-title research information; Rosen and Associates inspection report (1996); data sheet for CharlestonWISE Impact Project (Sustainability Institute) that includes construction date, square footage, number of stories, building orientation, system materials/types, Sanborn Map research notes, and additions/alterations notes (Mariah Schwartz, 2011). See Easement Documentation Photo Files for easement donation photographs (Exh. B to Deed of Conservation Easement) and Covenant/Easement Inspection Photo Files for inspection photography.
