WENTWORTH.012.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1853-55; extensively renovated with alterations ca. 1969. William C. Armstrong, then manager of the nearby Bennett's Rice Mill, constructed this unusual dwelling by the mid-1850s. Armstrong died in 1857 and his heirs sold the house to the Burckmeyer family, who owned many properties on Society Street. During renovation, new owners removed the front piazza, demolished later rear additions, added a new iron balcony to the second story, and filled the central arch leading to the rear.
