Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1853-55; extensively renovated with alterations ca. 1969. William C. Armstrong, then manager of the nearby Bennett's Rice Mill, constructed this unusual dwelling by the mid-1850s. Armstrong died in 1857 and his heirs sold the house to the Burckmeyer family, who owned many properties on Society Street. During renovation, new owners removed the front piazza, demolished later rear additions, added a new iron balcony to the second story, and filled the central arch leading to the rear. Two files contain original legal documentation of the covenant on the property; correspondence and other documentation related to the sale and management of the property; documentation related to HCF's purchase of the property; documentation related to HCF's rehabilitation of the property; annual inspection reports; requests for alterations; historical/chain-of-title research (Stoney 1963, 1996); research notes (undated, unattributed); FOHG house history (undated); newspaper article (1970 DYKYC); house history from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston (1984); house history from Tour Guide Training Manual (2011); copy of HCF easement information card (TMS number, year of construction, significant resident(s), deed research, deed restrictions, measurements, and tax information); data sheet for CharlestonWISE Impact Project (Sustainability Institute) that includes construction date, square footage, number of stories, building orientation, system materials/types, Sanborn Map research notes, and additions/alterations notes (Mariah Schwartz, 2011). No inspection photographs on file (see Easement Manager).
