Broad Street Beautification PlanEntry/Object ID
HCF.005.4aScope and Content
Historic Charleston Foundation took the lead in coordinating an extensive "face-lift" of a four-block stretch of Broad Street, the city's financial and legal center, in an effort to revitalize the area by beautifying the streetscape and improving the appearance of the buildings. Property owners were encouraged to paint facades in historic color schemes guided by sketch of every building to show the recommended color. The removal of inappropriate signs was also recommended, and local utilities removed overhead wires by placing electric and telephone lines underground and planting trees. The project was funded by a grant from The America The Beautiful Fund.
