Scope and Content

Historic Charleston Foundation took the lead in coordinating an extensive "face-lift" of a four-block stretch of Broad Street, the city's financial and legal center, in an effort to revitalize the area by beautifying the streetscape and improving the appearance of the buildings. Property owners were encouraged to paint facades in historic color schemes guided by sketch of every building to show the recommended color. The removal of inappropriate signs was also recommended, and local utilities removed overhead wires by placing electric and telephone lines underground and planting trees. The project was funded by a grant from The America The Beautiful Fund. Documentation includes: Folder 1: Descriptions and background information: Broad Street Beautification Plan brochure; "Broad Street: A Walking Adventure" brochure; report "Broad Street Beautification Project Color Scheme and Sign Control; HCF press release(?) about the completion of the plan (5/26/1971); excerpt from Historic Preservation for a Living City by Robert Weyeneth. Folder 2: Blueprint of front facade of 21 Broad Street (Simons, Lapham, Mitchell & Small, July 30, 1968). Measures ~19" x 26# unfolded. Includes note to Frances Edmunds from Bob (Clement?) about planned improvements to the building. Folder 3: Blueprint drawing of Old Charleston Gas Lamp, various views; developed from photograph of The Paul House and drawing of gas street lamp on Meeting Street (Thomas E. Thornhill, 1960). Measures ~17" x 13". Includes accompanying note from Mr. Thornhill to Frances Edmunds dated 10/4/1968. Two copies of drawing in folder. Folder 4: Blueprint "Proposed Natural Gas Lights Along Broad Street" (South Carolina Electric & Gas Co., March 21, 1969). Measures 34" x 12" unfolded). Folders 5-6: Broad Street Beautification files transferred from the Frances R. Edmunds Papers (Projects series). Includes program brochure; "Walking Tour Adventure" brochure; report "Color Scheme and Sign Control"; lists of addresses with required exterior work; correspondence regarding the Broad Street Beautification Committee; correspondence with Piggly Wiggly regarding renovations; etc.
