Constructed ca. 1847; renovated and restored 1966-67. Christopher Myers's house features a substantial basement story with triple-tiered side piazzas, in contrast to its contemporary neighbor at 17 Wentworth Street with truncated basement and a double piazza. Myers, a merchant, sold the building in 1853 to W.L. Chapin, a wholesale druggist who also kept a harness-making business on nearby Hayne Street. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
Two files contain legal documentation of the covenant on the property; correspondence and other documentation related to the sale and management of the property; documentation related to HCF's purchase and rehabilitation of the property; annual inspection reports; requests for alterations; FOHG house history (1982); copy of HCF easement information card (TMS number, year of construction, significant resident(s), deed research, deed restrictions, measurements, and tax information); graduate student report (Kate Stamps, 2008) on the history of the house, which includes historical and chain-of-title research, maps, photos, and other supporting documentation.
