WENTWORTH.018.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1839; restored 1970 and late-1970s. David Lopez, a merchant and builder whose Rhode Island-born father owned a store on King Street selling architectural ornament, built these dual tenements (18-20 Wentworth Street) with his brother-in-law, Isaac Moise, between 1839 and 1841. At nearly the same time Lopez was active in some capacity in the construction of the new Beth Elohim Synagogue on nearby Hasell Street. Lopez sold out his interest, during or just after construction, to Moise, a founder of the Reformed Society of Israel and brother of Penina Moise, a noted antebellum writer and originator of the first Jewish Sunday school. Typical of Greek Revival row houses, both units stand two stories on raised basements and follow the side-hall, double-parlor plan. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
Two files contain legal documentation of the covenant on the property; correspondence and other documentation related to the sale and management of the property; documentation related to HCF's purchase of the property; annual inspection reports; requests for alterations; FOHG house histories (1969, 1979); HCF covenant information card (TMS number, year of construction, residents pre-post HCF purchase, deed restrictions, measurements, and tax information); historical/chain-of-title research notes; house history from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston (1984).
