WENTWORTH.023.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1843; restored 1966. James Jeffords, a planter, built the house at 23 Wentworth Street as his personal town residence in the mid-19th century. Jeffords's detailed stucco single house with corner quoins and stone window heads and sills stands apart from its eastern neighbor. Archibald Speare acquired his property next door at 21 Wentworth Street as a vacant lot in 1845 and sold the site by 1848 with "a new brick dwelling and outbuilding." The houses are similarly scaled yet achieve a degree of individuality from their differing facades.
Two files contain legal documentation of the covenant on the property; correspondence and other documentation related to the sale and management of the property; documentation related to HCF's purchase of the property; annual inspection reports; requests for alterations; chain-of-title research; FOHG house history (furnishings only, ca. 1970s); newspaper articles (including 1979 DYKYC); SC Dept. of Archives and History architectural survey form; house history from Buildings of Charleston; HCF easement/covenant information card (TMS number, year of construction, residents pre-post HCF purchase, deed restrictions, measurements, and tax information).
