WENTWORTH.043.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1840; interior altered 1903, 1936, 1977, 1989. The Wentworth Street Methodist Protestant Church originally completed on this site in 1834, was rebuilt after the fire of 1838 in the Greek Revival style. The congregation that presently meets here is the result of a post Civil War merger of the original church with the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, then on Morris Street. The congregation of St. Andrews Lutheran Church repaired the building's shell damage and continued its expansion with the completion in 1894 of a new Romanesque Revival Sunday school building with crenellated steeple. The main church building features a fairly typical Greek Revival portico, divided from the street by tall wrought-iron gates. The body of the building is decorated with pilasters dividing the bays of its side walls. The church's interior was extensively redecorated in 1908 with a refurbished, apsidal chancel (which contains a painting of Christ's Ascension, a copy of Gottlieb Peter Berman's painting of a century before), an arch with extensive plaster decoration, stenciled and frescoed walls and stained glass windows. Much of the plasterwork in the arch and the painted decorations were removed in the late-1930s and the church's interior was simplified. The old Sunday school building had been removed a few years earlier and replaced by the present brick Colonial Revival style building.* St. Andrew's also holds title to the 2-story brick 1840s single house next door at 37 Wentworth Street, used as an archive building. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
File contains booklet "History of St. Andrew's Lutheran Church"; newspaper articles (including 1981 DYKYC); draft FOHG church history (2001); church history (Churches of Charleston & the Lowcountry); documentation of BZA use-variance controversy (2012).
*Note: A researcher suggests that the old Sunday school building referenced above "is still, for the most part, standing. It appears the clock/bell tower was removed and windows on each level, including the attic, have been added. Additionally soffit and fascia has been added but the roof pitch appears the same."
