WENTWORTH.092.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1850; altered 1880s. Like many houses in this part of Harleston Village, 92 Wentworth is built what was part of the glebe lands left to the Church of England by the settler Affra Coming. In 1770 the Church subdivided 17 acres into building lots, which were leased to provide income. Two of the first lessees were John Commins and John Daly, who resided here in the last half of the 1850s. Jacob S. Schirmer, apparently the first secular owner of the house, bought the property from St. Philip's Church in 1859. 92 Wentworth Street appears to be on land that was once part of the garden of the Bishop Robert Smith House at 6 Glebe Street. This 2½ story wooden single house has been modified to reflect changing times. Notable changes include the mansard roof in the Second Empire style and the replacement of the smaller original windows with large paned glass. Most of these changes took place in the 1880s when Jacob Knobeloch owned the dwelling. Knobeloch was responsible for changing the orientation of the dwelling to Wentworth Street by moving it a full 90 degrees.
