120 Wentworth Street (John Burckmeyer House)Entry/Object ID
WENTWORTH.120.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1791-1800. This 2½ story dwelling on a raised masonry basement was built by a German butcher and may be one of the earliest houses in the immediate area. John Burckmeyer acquired the property in 1791 and completed construction before the end of the decade. The house retains much of its original fabric on the interior, including wainscoting and Adamesque detailing. However, much of the exterior was changed after the earthquake of 1886 by the Thomas family. The extensive renovations included adding rooms to the rear of the house, adding a second tier to the piazza, and changing the windows and siding to adopt a more up-to-date Victorian look.
