WENTWORTH.137.1Scope and Content
Constructed 1837-38. Alexander Black, a merchant, bought this property from Basile Lanneau, who owned numerous parcels on Montagu Street. Black built what appears to be a typical Charleston single house with beaded siding, simple windows, and an enclosed piazza. Nevertheless, the piazzas are shorter than usual and terminate at the main stairwell, which, unlike in most single houses, is not centrally located. The entrance, which once was the piazza door, is off center and Victorian in style. The original occupant was Mrs. Catherine Lopez, listed in the city ward book as a "free person of color."
