Constructed circa 1838; restored 1970s. Russell Warren, architect. Unlike most of the houses in the village of Harleston this monumental dwelling sits back from the street and features a front facing portico supported by columns with Temple of the Winds capitals. The house was designed by the Rhode Island architect, Russell Warren, kinsman of Charleston merchant Nathaniel Russell. Built by a dry goods merchant, the house was advertised for rent with a description that mentioned its "handsomely laid out garden," its bathing house, and running-water conveniences." (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
File contains newspaper articles (including 1970 and 1984 DYKYC); building history from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston (1984); building history from Tour Guide Training Manual (2011); excerpt from Architects of Charleston; draft FOHG House history (2001); house tour notes (unattributed, undated); 1886 Earthquake damage assessment; Hurricane Hugo damage survey (main house and carriage house).Collection
