WENTWORTH.144.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1800; restored late-1980s. This large plantation-style double house dates from the post-Revolutionary period, although its exact date of construction is unclear. For many years the home of the Fleming family, it was later used by Dr. Augustus Fitch, who had a medical office here. The property was used as two residential units into the early-20th century. During the World War I, 144 Wentworth was turned over to the Red Cross for use as offices by Miss Mary Jane Ross. Upon her death in 1922, the house was placed in a trust to be used for public charities. This 2½ story dwelling on a raised brick basement is located at the rear of the lot line and faces a large garden. A double staircase of brownstone rises to the first floor of the piazza. Today it is a single-family residence again. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
