WENTWORTH.156.1Scope and Content
Constructed 1851. James Sanders, a mason, built this 2½-story stuccoed brick Charleston single house on a raised basement in 1851 after acquiring a portion of a larger lot from the attorney Francis McHugh. An arched opening on the street level leads to a stairway and a raised piazza entry with a pedimented frontispiece. Many of the embellishments on the front facade, such as the segmental arches on the second story and bracketed cornice, are Italianate in style and capped by a parapeted gable with a tripartite window.
File contains newspaper article (1970 DYKYC); house history from City of Charleston Tour Guide Training Manual (2011).
